Seawater browning alters community composition and reduces nutritional quality of plankton in a subarctic marine ecosystem

چکیده
Inflows of coloured terrestrial organic matter cause seawater browning and reduced phytoplankton production in subarctic coastal ecosystems, potentially deteriorating the nutritional quality marine food webs. We analyzed fatty-acid (FA) compositions seston zooplankton taxa Eurytemora affinis cladocerans at three locations northern Baltic Sea. At northerly locations, salinity phosphorus concentrations were low, while humic substances (i.e., matter) high. The southerly location showed opposite trend. ratio between alga-specific ?3 polyunsaturated FA terrigenous monounsaturated (MUFA) decreased from south to north, as did docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) MUFA cladocerans. With increasing substances, biomass DHA-rich content increased. Our results indicate that alters composition, consequently affecting quality.

Simulated eutrophication and browning alters zooplankton nutritional quality and determines juvenile fish growth and survival
The first few months of life is the most vulnerable period for fish and their optimal hatching time with zooplankton prey is favored by natural selection. Traditionally, however, prey abundance (i.e., zooplankton density) has been considered important, whereas prey nutritional composition has been largely neglected in natural settings. High-quality zooplankton, rich in both essential amino acid...

Research Article: Effect of feeding level on water quality and plankton community structure in the yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) rearing enclosure ecosystem
Four feeding levels (40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of satiation) were designed as the different treatment groups to assess its effects on water quality and plankton community structure in the yellow catfish rearing enclosure ecosystem. The results showed that the weight gain and specific growth rate decreased significantly as the feeding level decreased. The soluble nutrients (except for NO2-N) concen...
متن کاملClimate shifts the interaction web of a marine plankton community
Climatic effects in the ocean at the community level are poorly described, yet accurate predictions about ecosystem responses to changing environmental conditions rely on understanding biotic responses in a food-web context to support knowledge about direct biotic responses to the physical environment. Here we conduct time-series analyses with multivariate autoregressive (MAR) models of marine ...
متن کاملClimate and Demography Dictate the Strength of Predator-Prey Overlap in a Subarctic Marine Ecosystem
There is growing evidence that climate and anthropogenic influences on marine ecosystems are largely manifested by changes in species spatial dynamics. However, less is known about how shifts in species distributions might alter predator-prey overlap and the dynamics of prey populations. We developed a general approach to quantify species spatial overlap and identify the biotic and abiotic vari...
